阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
There was once a bridge over a large river. Each day, a train would come and the bridge would be turned sideways across the river, allowing the train to cross it.
A man sat in a small room on one side of the river where he operated (操作) the controls to turn the bridge and lock it into place when a train came.
One evening, when the man saw the train lights, he stepped to the controls and tried to turn the bridge into position, but, to his surprise, he found the locking control did not work. If the bridge was not safe in position, it would move back and forth at the ends, causing the train to jump the track and go crashing into the river.
The man hurried across the bridge to the other side of the river where there was a locking lever (操纵杆) that he could operate by hand. Suddenly, he heard a sound from the direction of his room, “Daddy, where are you?”
His four-year-old son was crossing the bridge to look for him. If he took the boy away from the bridge first, he couldn’t get back to the lever in time. But if he didn’t, the boy would be killed by the train. Either the people on the train or his little son must die…
The train passed safely and no one on the train saw the small broken body that was thrown into the river by the train. Nor did they see the man who was still holding the locking lever.

They crossed in front of me as I was driving out of the store parking lot. At first I was angry at being delayed (耽搁) for a whole ten seconds. I quickly became patient when I realized that this was an elderly couple.
The man leaned (倚靠) on his wife who walked in front of him. He not only used her for support but it was obvious that he was blind. The two of them worked as one—each needing the other to function in this fast-changing world.
That little example of true strength changed my whole personal understanding of life that day. Suddenly I wasn’t so mad about having to work a few extra hours on Sundays. I had my strength, and I was still relatively young.
That picture of those two elderly people walking with dignity and strength stayed with me the entire week. My life wasn’t so bad after all. I had my health and a good job. I had a wonderful, supportive wife. I started to think --- not only was I lucky to have it all, but so was that wonderful old couple, who, despite the trials and sufferings of a long life, still had the love and support of each other to carry them through this world.
There are so many people out there just like that couple. My wife and I sometimes picture ourselves in our old age, walking arm-in-arm into the sunset. That image always gives us a warm feeling of comfort. Just remember, none of us would be here if it wasn’t for our elders. We should all have extra time and patience when it comes to helping our elder friends.
74. When the author was about to drive away, the couple ______.
A. entered the store B. hit his car
C. got in his way D. asked him for help
75. After he saw the couple, the author would ______.
A. drive at a low speed B. never think of his wife
C. be impatient to the end D. spend less time complaining
76. What did the author think of the couple?
A. They lived a happier life than he.
B. Their lasting love was highly thought of.
C. They didn’t live a life without hardships.
D. They won respect by walking together.
77. What would be the best title for this passage?
A. Spend an Extra Minute B. Stay with Your Wife
C. Be Careful When Driving D. Respect the old, Please

Song Yinan, 16, used to hate drinking milk for breakfast. But the Taiyuan girl began drinking it because her mom, as well as many others, said that milk was good for her growing body. Besides, milk and bread made up a convenient diet that helped save her parents a lot of time after Song entered junior high and had to arrive at school early in the morning. After that, Mengniu and Yili became her favorite brands of morning milk and yoghurt after dinner.
However, she has been forced to change her diet since the recent milk crisis. Many best-selling home milk brands such as Mengniu, Yili and Bright were discovered to contain melamine (三聚氰胺), which is usually used to make plastic. The bad milk products have sickened more than 53,000 babies and killed four.
“I shifted to rice porridge,” she said. “My mom has to get up at 5:50 am to prepare my breakfast and make sure that it cools down when I get up.”
Song has become addicted to milk, so she doesn’t quite enjoy her morning meal these days although she knows that it’s a tiring job for her working mom.
“I’ll turn back to Mengniu and Yili when they finally improve their products,” she said.
However, right now Song’s mom tries to adjust (调整) her eating habits by cooking different foods. Besides rice porridge, noodles, egg drop soup and soybean milk are prepared as her breakfast.
“I’m considering buying a soybean grinder (豆浆机), but the prices of soybean grinders are going up these days,” complained her mother.
Beijing student Huang Shuang’s family has a grinder, and soybean milk has become a regular recipe in the family during the weekends. From Monday to Friday, the 16-year-old has given up drinking Mengniu for Sanyuan, the only big brand that passed the quality test two weeks ago.
78. According to the passage, why do some students stop drinking milk?
A. Because their parents have enough time to prepare other foods for them
B. Because they get tired of drinking the same type of milk.
C. Because some harmful materials are found in some kinds of milk.
D. Because milk becomes more and more expensive.

There are more than 1,500 daily newspapers in the US. Each one is usually sold only in one part of the country. Cities have their own newspapers and they cover national and international news. In large cities there is often more than one newspaper and the different ones express different political opinions. Some newspapers are sold in nearly all parts of the US, e.g. USA Today and the national edition of the New York Times. Two other newspapers, the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post are known and respected all over the US but can’t be bought everywhere. Other important newspapers are: the Boston Globe, sold in New England, the Chicago Tribune, sold in the Midwest.
There are also weekly newspapers in all parts of the US which cover local news, such as what is happening in the local neighbourhood. Fewer people read these than read daily newspapers.
Daily newspapers are published on every day of the week except Sunday. Sunday newspapers are very big, often having several separate parts. They contain many longer articles and a lot of advertisements. Each section deals with different subjects—national and international news, sports travel, etc. One section, the classifieds (分类广告), has advertisements for jobs and things for sale. Another section is called the funnies. There is often also a magazine which is in color.
In the 1960s, a group of newspapers began to appear that were later called “alternative (可选的) press”. They expressed extreme political opinion. Many of this movement, such as the Village Voice in New York and the Reader in Chicago, are less extreme today and more widely read.
82. Which is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A. The Los Angeles and the Washington Post are known all over the world.
B. USA Today is sold in nearly all parts of the US.
C. More people read daily newspapers than read weekly newspapers.
D. Some important newspapers are sold abroad.
83. According to the passage, we can learn that _____.
A. daily newspapers are published every day
B. Sunday newspapers are very big with several different parts
C. Each section of Sunday newspapers deals with a similar subject
D. The section of the funnies contains advertisements for jobs and things for sale

A. out of order B. far from normal C. excellent D. wrong
85. What can we know from the passage?
A. City newspapers only cover national news.
B. People can say whatever they like in newspapers.
C. All newspapers are only for political use.
D. The Village Voice and the Reader are popular with more people today.
